The devil and the power of relationship. The Devil (XV Major Arcana Tarot): Tarot Card Meaning

Devil - XV Major Arcana

In the astrological aspect, the Devil is patronized by the planet Pluto. The planet itself is very mysterious, since scientists discovered it relatively recently. It influences the masses of people. Pluto symbolizes one of the most complex processes in the world - transmutation. He is responsible for destruction and punishment, rebirth and transformation, as well as for the greatest mystery - birth and death. Esotericists attribute to the influence of Pluto all the darkest things in a person.

Alternative names for the Arcana Devil: Fatum, Dark Side, Rock, Dark Forces.

Description of the Arcana

In the center of the Arcana, with the appearance of a ruler, the Devil sits. He settled on a huge cube, to which people are chained - a man and a woman. People are depicted in a suffering, but calm pose. This is not surprising: there is something to suffer because of - after all, their freedom is limited by massive chains, they depend on the will of the Devil, from whom hateful fetters prevent them from leaving.

But is it? Maybe people have created an illusion of dependence? Maybe they just lost the will to resist? Maybe people just resigned themselves to their fate and began to enjoy their condition? Such questions are not accidental, because the chains on people are free, they can leave them themselves at any moment, but they do not. It can be concluded that their addiction is solely their own choice. This is one of the leitmotifs of the Arcana.

The fact that the Devil is depicted on the Arcana is beyond doubt. Here is all his paraphernalia, which religion endowed the Prince of Darkness - horns, wings, tail and an inverted pentagram.

In the Tarot of the Age of Aquarius, the Arcana has a slightly different image. The proud and majestic Devil is still present on the map, but here he towers over the tied people, standing confidently on the ground. Wings cover him like a cloak. People are tied to it not with chains, but with ropes, which are also in a free state. The Prince of Darkness holds a huge ball in his hands, which symbolizes the material world, conquered by him.

In some decks, the sacred meaning of the Arcana is revealed by the attribute of the Devil - Fire. It would seem that this is a direct indication of hellfire, but there are no other images of hell on the map, the physical world is more reflected here. The presence of fire in the physical world only confirms that the law of cause and effect is in effect here and now. For retribution, one does not need to wait for the mythical Supreme Court. He is here on earth, and hellfire will burn anyone who does the right thing.

The suffering that a person experiences is the fire that the Devil holds in his hands. It is through these sufferings that he binds people to the material world.

Sacred meaning of the Devil

Wisdom and the deep sacred meaning of the XV Arcana can and should be considered in two aspects. The first aspect is, in fact, the very central figure of the Arcana - the Devil. In it one can see both the Prince of Darkness himself and his entire demonic hierarchy.

In the light of this aspect, Arkan points to the temptation that a person constantly has to overcome in order to go through his path of self-improvement and return to the bosom of Divine grace. God sent people from Paradise, giving them the opportunity to atone for their grave sin, and allowed the Devil to place obstacles, for only by fighting temptation does the Spirit come to perfection. In some decks, the demonic hierarchy is symbolized by an inverted pentagram on the Devil's forehead.

A person has a choice before any temptation, and this is very clearly indicated in the Arcana - although people are tied, the threads (or chains in some decks) connecting them are not stretched and do not hold the person tightly. Any of them can easily leave their bonds. In fact, this Arcana can become fatal for an inert person, but in rare cases it symbolizes fate (fatum) as such, because when there is a choice, fatality recedes.

Curious is the fact that if a person manages to resist temptation by combining his rationality with spirituality, then the destructive force becomes his assistant on the path of self-improvement. In fact, it is one of the mechanisms that raise it.

An example of such "collaboration" is the legend of the construction of the temple by Solomon. Thanks to his brilliant assistant Chiron, who managed to create a unique architecture and build a structure in a very short time, Solomon's temple became a model of the greatest craftsmanship. Solomon decided to find out how a simple architect managed to make such a structure unsurpassed in its beauty. He called Chiron to him, and he told that the design and construction of the temple was carried out by demons.

The second aspect of the Arcana is the dark side of the personality of the person himself. It is always present, but it can be in a manifested or unmanifested state. Based on this, a person can never be absolutely good or absolutely bad. He reveals each of his sides in accordance with the events taking place and his own attitude towards his experiences.

It must be said that the dark world, symbolized by the Devil, consists not only of the essences of the demonic hierarchy, acting strictly within the framework of the law of cause and effect as accusers and tempters, but also of the essences produced by the malicious arbitrariness of man. The soul of these created beings is the excess and passion of man, and their subtle body is the totality of vibrations derived from this passion.

A person not only gives birth to these entities, but also endows them with power, which subsequently enslaves the consciousness of the person himself. On the Arcana, this is depicted in the form of the figure of the Devil dominating over people.

In some decks, the Devil has horns, which indicates his animal nature, but not as an animal in the physical sense, but as an instinctiveness that gives rise to passion and unrestraint. The human images on these Arcana have the same horns. They mean the same, but with a less intense character. In such decks, a man and a woman are also depicted with tails, but while the male tail is engulfed in the flames of anger, the female ends with a bunch of grapes, which indicates dependence on wealth and voluptuousness.

The Devil has wings that symbolize independence - at any moment he can break loose and fly away. The ball in the hand of the Devil says that it is impossible to hide from the devilish temptation anywhere: the whole planet is in his hands.

There are decks where the Devil is depicted sitting on a cube, which represents the material world. Chains are attached to it, binding a person to this material world. Their nature can be completely different - material well-being, emotional attachments, love relationships, illnesses, fanatical ideas.

In some decks, the Devil has a torch in his hands, pointing down at people. It symbolizes the presence of the devilish (hellish) fire already in the physical world, which people feel through their suffering.

Mythological correspondence of the Devil

In mythology, the Devil can also be considered in two aspects. The first of them takes you to the biblical stories about Lucifer, Satan and the demons who joined him. The most beautiful and wise Angel, in his zeal for the greatness of God, was cast into the abyss, dragging his like-minded people with him.

The second myth that reveals the essence of the Arcana is the myth of Hercules and his 12 exploits, which consisted in the fight against monsters, personifying evil.

The meaning of the direct Devil in the scenario

As a rule, the appearance of the direct XV Arcana in the layout indicates the presence of dependence. Since the Devil manifests itself in all spheres of human life, dependence can be of a different nature, it can come from both the qualities of the person himself and from the surrounding people and circumstances. The nature of the dependence is determined either by the main issue in the layout, or by the Arcana surrounding the Devil.

The devil conceived "colors" the nearby Arcana. Even in a positive card, he can bring a dark characteristic. For example, next to Arcana III (Empress) or Arcana IV (Emperor), he will show an exorbitant thirst for power or material wealth. Next to Arcana XIV (Temperance), even if he is in a straight position, the Devil shows that a person has broken after a period of abstinence and "set off in all serious ways."

Next to the Devil, Arcanum V (Hierophant, Pope) turns into hypocrisy, and Arcanum VIII (Justice) into corruption schemes. If around the Devil there are picture cards (Ladies and Kings), then Arkan will tell about the presence in a person’s life of people who cause manifestations of his negative qualities or possess them themselves.

It is a mistake to assume that the appearance of the Devil in the general layout always speaks of corruption. Such a negative moment can be said with accuracy only if the second Arcana (High Priestess) is present in the scenario simultaneously with the Devil. Here, for sure, we can talk about some kind of negative magical effect on a person, and this can be both pure damage, and various kinds of love spells, and rituals performed to worsen the financial situation.

Arkan most often speaks of negative things or of excessive manifestations of even good qualities that lead a person into a state of dependence. But it's not always exceptional. In some cases, the Devil is a warning that a person may be faced with a delicate situation. And it is not necessary that such a situation will turn into trouble for a person. Arkan warns that it is necessary to use cunning in order to beautifully get out of this situation.

The surrounding cards in this case will show how the situation will end or indicate the aspect in which a person should turn to his resourcefulness. This is precisely the moment of temptation that is present in the sense of the Arcanum. Very often you need to go to the temptation in order to cope with it later, and not bypass it.

The Direct Devil very often speaks of the unreliability of the information received, or the impossibility of verifying it. Arkan also speaks of fanaticism.

The meaning of the inverted Devil in the layout

The inverted Devil, as well as the direct one, speaks of dependence, but in this case, the emphasis should be on the fact that this situation is almost hopeless. It is in this position that Arkan is fatal and can be called Rock.

We can say that a person had the opportunity to find a way out of the current situation, but he did not use it, neglected the signs that Fate gave him, and, driven by his passions, slipped deeper and deeper into the negativism of the situation. As a rule, in this case, we can say that a person made hasty and ill-considered decisions.

When an inverted Devil appears in the layout, it can be said with confidence that a person is faced with a finely thought-out and well-realized deception, the sophistication of some people. It can also denote him in a state of deceit or sophistication. The surrounding Arcana will show those areas of human life in which deception occurs. But very often one lie leads to another, forcing a person to stay in a carousel of lies.

The inverted Arkan always speaks of the strongest intemperance and destructive passion, and sometimes this can reach perversions, when a fanatic begins to realize all his obsessive desires.

In combination with other Arcana, as well as in the upright position, the inverted Arcana causes a negative connotation to all surrounding cards. But if in the case of a direct Devil, we are talking only about the qualities of a person that he may not use, then in the case of an inverted one, we can already talk about deeds. Thus, the inverted Arcana aggravates negativism and deprives a person of the opportunity to resist temptations.

In this case, we can talk about the fatality of certain human traits that determine his current position in life. This is what makes the situation hopeless, because a person is guided by threshold qualities that have already become complexes.

Like the direct Arcana, the inverted Devil speaks of temptation, but in this case a person is deprived of the opportunity to avoid this temptation due to "internal blindness" and because of the fatality of the situation itself. Circumstances do not leave a person a choice, as well as his complexes.

Direction of self-development

The devil personifies human ignorance, delusion, dependence on inner desires, which manifest themselves in life with all sorts of negative qualities. For example, fear, anxiety, confusion, despondency, sadness, anger. It can also be a moral disorder, irritation or excessive conceit.

All these qualities are a sign for a person that his own complexes dominate him. They lead a person to mental anguish, and this can be caused by any events in life.

In order to embark on the path of self-development, a person needs to realize that he is chained to the material world, tied to it through his complexes and desires. These bindings are artificial and you can get rid of them, because on the Arcana the connecting threads are not stretched, but are in a free position. A person can independently remove these fetters, and the Devil will not even prevent this. He retreats before the decisiveness of man.

If a person manages to realize his position and the reasons for being in it, combine the rationality of the mind and the spiritual component, he can not only escape from the dependence on the trap set by the Devil, but also subdue this powerful force.

This allows you to get rid of even the strongest addiction, such as alcoholism or drug addiction. Moreover, the Devil on self-consciousness says that a person has such an opportunity at the moment.

The inverted Arkan says that at the moment “the chains have been tightened”, but the person himself has tightened them. The reason for this is the confusion of a person who, perhaps, understands his destructive addiction, but does not seek in himself the spiritual strength and will to correct the situation.

In this position, the saddest thing is that a person begins to enjoy this addiction and does not even try to get out of it, moreover, he is looking for all kinds of reasons to stay in this position and rarely accepts outside help. Only some significant event in his life can bring a person out of such a state, and it must certainly bring him pain.

If a person overcomes his addiction and fights temptation, then he returns to the XIV Arcana (Temperance) and can begin his journey again, and if he does not overcome, then the XVI Arcanum (Tower) awaits him ahead, which predicts complete destruction as a retribution.

To overcome the inverted Devil, a person must first try to set him in a straight position, realizing that he is actually at the bottom, from which you can always push off. It is necessary to neglect the fatality of this Arcana - to refuse pleasures.

Work

We can say that work is the only area where the Devil points more to positive factors. The main point in interpreting this Arcana in the layout for work is that this card is a warning.

It warns both of the possibility of making good profits, and of the circumstances under which these profits will be made. With this map, more than ever, you need to pay attention to the surrounding maps. It is the neighboring Arcana that will show the consequences that the profits will bring, and they may not always be positive.

The devil in any case shows that in doing business there is always craftiness or cunning. This is not pure cheating, just the presence of some hidden points. In this case, the Devil is in the details, which the rest simply will not pay attention to.

Very often, the Devil card indicates that in his business life a person is subjected to a test of his moral principles. As an example - a bribe, kickback. The Devil can also talk about both illegal business, weapons, drugs, and violation of the law in doing business - hiding income, building corruption schemes, illegal operations.

In financial terms, the Devil always talks about getting a benefit, but he always warns that it is associated with a certain risk. If a person is not smart enough, cunning or decisive, he should not get involved in the games of the Devil. Only a sober mind, ultra-precise prudence and logic, inner strength and confidence, fearlessness are important here. Only with such qualities can a person get the maximum benefit and bypass all the risks.

It is important to say that success will come only to the person who is prepared for loss in advance. This relieves him of emotional dependence and illusions, allowing him to take over the mind and inner strength.

If a person does not run his own business, but works in some company, the Devil shows the opportunity to earn money, and this, as a rule, does not apply to the entire team, and sometimes even to the detriment of it. This is not a bonus, but left earnings.

Again, you need to focus on the fact that when laying out for work, it is very important to look at the surrounding Arcana. In the presence of figure cards (Kings and Queens), we can say that a person will, against his will, be involved in some kind of financial transaction bordering on fraud. In this case, the card gives a direct warning of increased attention and concentration in order to avoid such a situation.

The inverted Arkan literally indicates financial fraud. It can be dishonest earnings, theft, deceit. This may manifest itself in violation of contractual obligations, making a profit at the expense of non-payment to other people.

This is always a dishonest business that involves serious risk. As a rule, a large number of people are involved in such a business. These are actually illegal business schemes. With such a card, it is possible to receive money at the expense of others. The presence of an inverted Devil indicates that a person can be put in some kind of financial transaction.

If next to the inverted Devil lies the direct XI Arcana (Strength) or the direct IV Arcana (Emperor), we can talk about blackmail, threats, and a crime in the financial sector.

For a person working in a team, this is definitely meanness and a set-up. The surrounding cards will show from whose side this negativity can be expected. But it is worth considering that the inverted Devil indicates that the person himself brought himself to such circumstances, he himself allowed himself to be circled around his finger.

Personal relationships

In relationship readings, this card is very heavy in every aspect, except that it may show a civil marriage. The devil in a relationship shows the dependence of partners on each other. Moreover, this dependence can be different. It can be caused by feelings when a person is unable to end the relationship, even if they hurt him.

Dependence between partners can be financial in nature, when a person is ready to transgress ethical standards, endure inconvenience or overcome pain for the sake of the material benefits that the union provides.

Very often, the Devil in a relationship shows dependence because of his own complexes. For example, a person cannot end a relationship for fear of being alone.

If the card falls on one of the partners, then it can be assumed that this person is subject to some kind of vice - deceit, non-observance of marital fidelity, financial insolvency. However, at the same time, a person is so dodgy and cunning that he makes his partner accept his negative qualities as virtues. He can manipulate with the help of overt flattery, beautiful communication, sophistication in sex. If it is not a married couple, then there may be a promising flirtation that is bait.

For a lonely person, the Devil means the presence of some kind of complexes that prevent the preservation of relationships. It can be both low and high self-esteem. In fact, this person is not alone, there may be quite a lot of people around him who want a relationship with him, but he is dissatisfied with them. There may be a frequent change of partners, but at the same time the inability to create a truly serious and lasting relationship with any of them.

The inverted Arcanum in a relationship says that this union is dependent, but there is always fear. In such relationships, aggression, bullying (gross or subtle), sexual perversions on the one hand and silent humility on the other often appear.

If this card falls on one of the members of the union, then this person is the aggressor in the union. When the Two of Cups or the II Arcana (High Priestess) appears in the layout, then we can talk about numerous betrayals, and if the Three of Cups, then we can talk about rampant drunkenness or even alcoholism.

For a lonely person, an inverted Arkan promises the impossibility of creating a normal family, since all his relationships are built on extreme aggression. A family in this case is possible only with a weak-willed and pliable person.

Personality characteristic

In order to characterize the qualities of a person under the influence of Arcana XV, one must remember that Arkan himself speaks of excesses and immoderation, but does not characterize the personality as a whole. To understand what kind of immoderation this is, to describe the main personality traits that affect his behavior, you need another card of the Major Arcana.

With Arcana I (Magician), the Devil will indicate the cunning and resourcefulness of a person. With the II Arcana (High Priestess), he will show fanaticism or an unhealthy passion for occult trends. Here you can also talk about a tendency to secret connections, betrayals and the creation of secret alliances.

With the III Arcana (Empress), the Devil will talk about the jealousy and hysteria of a person, his exactingness and capriciousness. With Arcana IV (Emperor), on the one hand, the Devil shows greed, pedantry, stinginess. On the other hand, he points to a thirst for power and excessive power qualities.

With Arcana V (Pope, Hierophant), the card will show hypocrisy, deceit, hope in one's knowledge, desire to rise above a person, fanaticism, including religious. This man really knows a lot, but he boasts of it everywhere. With Arcana VI (Lovers), the Devil creates increased sexuality, promiscuity. With this combination, we can say that he is a bad family man. And more often than not, he prefers a bachelor life to stable family relationships. In women, this combination can speak of prostitution as a profession.

In combination with the VII Arcana (Chariot), the Devil indicates the bravura of a person. Such a person constantly pretends to be something that he is not really. With Arcana VIII (Justice), the card will show a tendency to fraud, illegal actions, dishonesty in relation to people, crime. The card can also indicate hatred and envy.

With Arcanum IX (The Hermit), Arcana XV points to extremes in one's spiritual and physical development. Such a person can be very obsessive in his point of view, he does not want to listen to arguments against and is always sure that he is right. With the X Arcana (Wheel of Fortune), we can say that a person is inclined to go to extremes: either immensely happy or deeply unhappy. He is very lax and undisciplined. Such people are quite often prone to manic or depressive states.

With Arcana XI (Strength), the Devil will show unreasonable aggression in all its manifestations, unreasonable use of force. With Arcana XII (The Hanged Man), the card will show a person in the form of endless sacrifice. Moreover, this sacrifice can be both natural and ostentatious. Most often, this person makes himself a victim, blaming everyone and everything for his problems.

In combination with the XIII Arcana (Death), the Devil shows the presence of an uncontrollable desire for change in everything, constant transformations. Such a person not only changes everything in his life, but also imposes changes on others. The nearby XIV Arcana (Temperance) indicates the excesses of the physical plane - immoderation in eating, drinking, gambling addiction, mania, fanatical devotion to some occupation.

Arcanum XVI (Tower) next to the Devil shows a pathological desire to destroy everything, and this manifests itself at any level. In fact, this is a human terminator. FROM XVII Arcana(Star) The devil indicates unbridled fantasy, building castles in the air, being in illusion. This man talks more than he does. He rarely goes beyond his dreams, does not even try to realize them.

With the XVIII Arcana (Moon), the Devil shows the imbalance of the psyche, up to mental illness. Such a person is very often overcome by various phobias and manias. Arcanum IXX (Sun) under the Devil will show an incorrigible optimist who refuses to see the negative aspects. For such a person, any failures are always painful, because he never foresees them.

In combination with the XX Arcana (Judgment), the card shows an extremely unpredictable person who can promise one thing, but do another. Such unpredictability harms him, first of all, because he is unpredictable even for himself. He can change his plans, putting his own interests at the forefront. Arcanum XI (Peace) says that here the Devil forces a person to achieve his inner peace at any cost, not paying attention to the ethical methods. It can be said about such a person that for the sake of his peace of mind he will go over the corpses.

The inverted Devil, with all these Arcana, only enhances all the negative qualities of a person, raising them to the rank of perversions.

Health

Health is a fairly common question for the Tarot deck. You need to look at it depending on the depth of the question itself. There are simple and complex layouts. With a simple layout, you can find out just the general condition of the body. To do this, you need to pull out one major Arcana from the deck in an inverted or straight form.

The alignment, which will show the state of some organ and the processes occurring in it, is done on 2 cards. The first card shows the organ itself, its current state, and the second one indicates its functionality.

A complex alignment helps to fully diagnose the body. It is made only by the Major Arcana. Cards are laid out for each chakra. You need to start from the bottom - Muladhara. When laying out cards, you need to focus on exactly that chakra for which the Arkan is pulled out. The alignment is read in combination: first, each card is looked at separately, and then refined by combinations with neighboring cards. This combination will help to more accurately identify problems.

General state

When viewing the layout for the general state of the Arkan, the Devil indicates the presence of dependence, both in the direct and inverted position. In addition, this map may indicate hormonal disbalance or taking strong pain medications.

If the Devil falls out when viewing the general state, then this layout necessarily requires decoding with additional Arcana. Actually, you need to understand more precisely, for which the chakra alignment would be the best option.

ongoing processes

The alignment into two Arcana with the participation of the Devil. If the Devil falls into the first position in a direct or inverted form, then here we can talk about the organ that is responsible for the hormonal background - the thyroid gland, pancreas, female and male genital organs.

In the second position is the fallen Devil about the immoderate work of the organ. For example, if we are talking about the heart, then here we can assume tachycardia. The lungs under the Devil will give out rapid breathing, and the liver will increase. This is both direct and reversed.

Chakra diagnostics

The devil on one of the chakras will show a violation of functions, and these are, as a rule, hyperfunctions. In some cases, he may say that the organ may require the use of strong painkillers. If such Arcana as XVI (Tower), XII (The Hanged Man) or XIII (Death) fall on the chakras adjacent to the Devil, then we can assume the use of anesthesia or narcotic drugs during surgical intervention.

Muladhara. The straight and reversed Devil on this chakra shows the hormonal release from the organs of the sexual sphere. Inverted only shows the threshold processes of such a failure.

Svadhisthana. In women, the Devil will show ovarian hyperfunction, failure menstrual cycle, problems with the endometrium. In men, it may show an overactive prostate. It is imperative to pay attention to the neighboring chakras, if one of the above Arcana falls there, then we can talk about the critical condition of the prostate gland, which will require the use of drugs. It is especially important to pay attention to this with the inverted Devil.

Manipura. On this chakra, for both women and men, Arkan will show a hormonal disorder of the pancreas with an increase in its function. A stronger deviation will show an inverted Devil.

Anahata. The devil on this chakra will show stomach problems that have arisen due to high acidity.

Vishuddha. On Vishuddha, the Devil talks about hyperfunction thyroid gland. The neighboring Arcana listed above can show the need for surgical intervention in the formation of nodes and an increase in the gland itself.

Ajna. The devil on this chakra no longer points to physical diseases in its purest form, but to the physical manifestations of mental disorders - drug addiction, alcoholism, substance abuse, gluttony.

Sahasrara. This chakra never gives a picture of the physical state of the body. It is more indicative of the human psyche. With the Devil on this chakra, one can speak of aggression, hysteria, perverted inclinations, negative character traits that are detrimental to the person himself.

Situation breakdown

In the layouts for the situation, the Devil shows the trials that are coming to a person, which must be passed consciously. If the situation is related to finances, this is always a favorable outcome, if a person is very careful and shows some resourcefulness.

If there are figure cards near the Devil (Ladies or Kings), then one should expect manifestations of envy, hatred, rage and adverse actions from one's environment. The gender of the person to beware of in this case will be indicated by the picture.

Another characteristic of the situation in the scenario with the Devil may indicate the presence of a negative moment if the corresponding Major Arcana are present: the II Arcana (High Priestess) will speak of damage, and the XII Arcana (The Hanged Man) will speak of a love spell or binding. In any case, these cards speak of an external influence that is detrimental to a person.

In some cases, if this does not apply to the financial sector, then the situation characterized by the Devil is associated with deception.

The devil indicates that a person has an obsession with acquiring some expensive thing, and this obsession makes him dependent on the desired thing. The purchase will be made, but the person will use all sorts of methods for this, and not always legal ones. Beware of deception and fraud.

To determine what is happening at the everyday level, you need to look at the neighboring Arcana. The presence of Cups will show a showdown, stormy communication or exorbitant libations, for example, alcoholism and plentiful parties. Pentacles will indicate the solution of financial issues - purchases that a person has planned for a long time, some transactions, accompanied by cunning and resourcefulness.

Wands (Staffs) will show communication with unpleasant people, which can lead to negative consequences. Swords will indicate the very negative consequences that a person will have to face.

The difference between the inverted Devil and the direct one is that the inverted card exacerbates the intensity of the situation. In a financial situation, an inverted Arkan also means profit, as well as a direct one, but in this case, the profit will be obtained illegally and there is always a risk of being exposed and retribution for illegal actions. The probability of getting into trouble is especially increased if the XIII Arcana (Justice) and the XVI Arcana (Tower) are located nearby in any position.

If the direct Devil speaks of a small deception, more similar to hiding the truth and cunning, then the inverted one will speak of deception, implicated in meanness. If there are cards of Swords nearby - Five, Seven, Eight, then one can speak with full confidence about meanness and the desire to substitute. With such cards, theft, slander, and perjury are also possible.

The inverted Devil speaks of a strong physical addiction, which is almost impossible to overcome without specialized treatment. For example, stable forms of drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling addiction, substance abuse.

At the everyday level, the card indicates immoral behavior, communication with law enforcement agencies due to aggressiveness, endless sprees and drunken orgies, especially if there is a Three of Cups in the layout.

Map of the day

When the Devil falls as a card of the day, it can be viewed from several aspects. Firstly, this card is of a precautionary nature and makes you be careful in any business planned for this day. It is very important to make a thorough analysis of any offers that will come in this day, because outwardly they will certainly be tempting.

At the same time, you need to carefully evaluate the behavior of the people from whom these proposals will come, your internal state and the behavior caused by it. It is necessary to clearly see not only that the risk is present, but to determine for yourself its degree.

In fact, on this day you can live under the motto: “Who does not risk, he does not drink champagne”, but we must remember that champagne can be drunk only if the risk is fully foreseen. Decisiveness and sober calculation will do their job.

Secondly, Arkan necessarily considers from another aspect - the emotional one. On this day, a surge of negativity in a person may occur, he may be too irritated, offended, aggressive, angry. The main thing is not to be led by your emotions, you just need to try to transfer everything to the next day, because such emotions can destroy everything that was planned earlier. Not the best day to make a decision, as emotions can greatly hurt later on.

On this day, it is better to refrain from love dates and acquaintances, since such relationships will be associated with deceit and meanness. Moreover, the date itself may not take place due to the lies and empty promises of the partner.

The inverted Devil warns that on this day you need to be extremely careful and careful, because addiction in its worst form can appear here, causing the most serious trouble to a person.

With any action, this card can indicate that on this day a person can expect meanness from someone else, be it close and familiar people, be it completely unknown. You need to be not only attentive, but also very suspicious. When leaving the house on this day, it is important to make sure that it is safe, because on this day there is a high probability of theft.

It is not worth starting new business on this day, you cannot agree to any trips and events if there is even the slightest doubt in your soul.

Card of the year

The devil on the card of the year has a dual meaning. First of all, he says that the year will be full of rapidly changing events. They can be classified as successful, but with one caveat: they will become such only in case of extreme caution and vigilance. Moreover, vigilance should not be lost even for a minute, because one failure can destroy even a skillfully built house of cards.

It should be remembered that the next Arcana in the deck is the destroyed Tower, and in this regard, any oversight can lead to destruction.

The second point is connected with the internal state of a person. This is the year in which a person must revise his "skeletons in the closet" so that the next year does not turn into a living hell. This year, a person can be plagued by various internal complexes: he can be under the control of jealousy, envy, resentment. Only an in-depth analysis of the causes will help him avoid danger.

This year, a person can build his life, realizing that all his relationships will be tied to material interests. This can serve as an additional source of his emotional outbursts, and the emotions will be negative.

The inverted Arkan indicates that the year will be very difficult psychologically. Some may even need the advice of a specialist - a psychologist, psychiatrist or even a narcologist. A person has a huge chance to fall into dependence on something or someone, and it will not be possible to get rid of it on their own.

As for events, it is important to understand here that the year will be marked by deceit and vile deeds. You need to be careful in choosing business partners and friends.

Arcana Council

Arkan gives advice to realize that at the moment a person is in a state of physical, psychological or worldview dependence. The Devil card says that it is necessary to understand: the person himself is the source of his own suffering, because the Devil is in himself. This inner Devil makes a person manifest his dark essence.

All pain and all suffering is the result of his ambition, which has reached mania, intemperance and exorbitant desires. The card shows how easy it is to free yourself from this suffering by accepting yourself and taking responsibility for yourself. The devil means disappointed hopes, limited opportunities and hidden fears that we are not aware of. It can also mean a painful addiction to sex or a craving for money. The devil sits on a small cube, which is definitely too small for him. This symbolizes the inconvenience that gives the Devil his limited outlook on life. However, the people depicted on the map look completely satisfied. At times, when things are bad, it's easiest to keep believing that everything is fine. In fact, everything begins to be normal only when you realize what is really happening. Discomfort just marks that something is not right in your life. If the inconvenience is imaginary - then, of course, everything is in order. The chains don't really tie people down, they are casually thrown on, they can be easily removed. This shows that the state of affairs can be changed and your burden is not as heavy as it seems. For example, if you have a difficult relationship with alcohol, you are able to solve this problem. But you can correct a negative situation only when you have enough determination and maturity. The appearance of the Devil in a reading often means that you are still not mature enough to rise above some contradiction. On the other hand, the Devil often hints at the need to "come to terms" with your own immaturity (not to deny it, but to make sure that it does not interfere with your life) or to follow instinct. Accepting your own humanity, with all its limitations, will free you from the shackles of self-hatred.

Questions to Ask Yourself When You Draw a Devil Card
  • Are you too preoccupied with material goods?
  • Do you feel that you are powerless against sexual urges or bad habits?
  • Are you upsetting or hurting someone a lot?
  • What do your instincts tell you? Wouldn't it be better to just follow this advice?
  • Are you trying too hard to be perfect?
  • Do you sometimes feel guilty for being you and ashamed of yourself?
Key Ideas
You may feel like you are stuck in a negative situation, but there is a solution to the problem, you just haven't seen it yet. The card encourages you to take responsibility for what happened, stop blaming other people or events, and muster up the courage to break free.
Friends
Straight Card: One of your friends is involved in a potentially dangerous situation - perhaps it is drugs or drunkenness. Your intervention now can make all the difference.

Reversed: You and your friends are being too childish. Now is the perfect time to start making better use of your time.

Studies
Upright Card: At school, you may be the object or witness of bullying and ridicule. Tell a teacher you trust about this - it's important not to let this situation drag on.

Reversed Card: The ability to cause a burst of laughter is a valuable talent, but don't waste it. You try too hard to please people. Pay a little less attention to others, and a little more to yourself.

Goodbye
Straight Card: If your boyfriend or girlfriend wants sex and you don't feel ready for it, don't give in. Let no reason force you to do what you do not want to do. Each such action is later regretted.

Reversed: Do you feel like you are constantly thinking about sex? Maybe you sleep with just anyone? If so, look again at the picture of the devil. The fact is that excess is always harmful, no matter what it is.

Family
Direct card: Perhaps someone in your family has a secret, or the person is simply upset and depressed. He needs professional help.

Reversed: If a loved one encourages you to do things you don't really want to do or puts you down, convince yourself to talk to a trusted adult about it. Ask for advice and help. If you are ashamed, it is false shame.

Interests
Direct map: You clearly know what you are interested in and what is not. You are old enough not to engage in activities that you consider harmful or dangerous.

Reversed: You seem to be wasting time in idle pastimes that are expensive but not profitable, such as drugs or pornography. Are you sure you need life substitutes? Try to live.

Health / Appearance
Straight card: Your appearance somehow pleases everyone, that is, everyone in general. You exude sexual energy that attracts people. Reversed: Are you sure your body deserves this treatment? Piercings and tattoos are fine in moderation, but in excess can be self-destructive. What didn't you like about yourself?
Money
Direct card: You like to spend money and buy good things. The greatest pleasure for you is shopping in general or buying gifts.

Reversed: You love money deeply and sincerely. The object is not worthy of such a depth of feeling, do not go too far. Now it is too easy to become a prisoner of the material world.

Divination in half a minute
Thomas felt bad. He is overweight, and he is not at all interesting (so he thought) - who wants to be friends with him? During the "windows" in the study schedule, Thomas avoided everyone and most often went to the library. When divining, he got the Devil card - a negative card showing that Thomas was trapped in a negative way of thinking. He imprisoned himself. The card made it clear that you need to change your approach to the situation and seek support from parents / guardians, or ask for help from a doctor.

Horns, the symbol of the Devil, associate him with Satan and everything that is dark and shameful.

But Satan is also Lucifer, the "bringer of light", which reflects the duality of this card.

Disappointment. Prohibitions. Obstacles. Fears.

In many Tarot decks, the Devil is depicted as a half-man, half-beast with horns and hooves; he usually sits on a throne to which two figures are chained. The essence of this card lies in its duality. The flip side of Satan is Lucifer, whose name means "bringer of light" - a reminder that light can be found in the midst of darkness. This card indicates the potential abilities that can be discovered in the most hidden and unexpected corners of our soul, if only we dare to break through the impenetrable darkness of the baser instincts that hide them.

Symbolism
The devil embodies the wildest and most unbridled aspects of our soul that we usually repress. Often we experience feelings of fear and shame in front of such hidden vices (such as lust, greed and envy) and refuse to recognize their existence in ourselves. Carl Jung called these qualities our dark "shadow" nature. The fact that we feel so uncomfortable when we are alone with our base nature means that we tend to project it onto other people in a way that does not confront it ourselves. This brings more devastation to our souls and causes more problems than if we dared to openly admit our vices and shortcomings. When we manage to unblock those parts of our psyche that disgust us, we release a powerful flow of positive energy. The devil teaches us to be aware and perceive as a whole all aspects of our soul, both dark and light. It reminds us that we are all made of good and evil. If we are aware of our own flaws and shortcomings, then we will be more tolerant of both ourselves and other people, i.e. let us no longer judge ourselves in others.
Interpretation
If you get this card, it means that you have to face the base part of your nature. You may find yourself in a difficult situation that makes you feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Resisting the temptation to look for someone else to blame for your circumstances, you should try to look for the source of your troubles in yourself. Although this experience may not be pleasant for you, it will allow you to get to know yourself better and discover your negative qualities that have been unconsciously suppressed until now. As a result, you will be able to remove these internal barriers that prevent your growth and get rid of your self-destructive tendencies. Therefore, if you wish to reach your full potential, then sooner or later you will have to meet your inner Devil and try to win him over to your side. This can serve as an impetus for gaining true freedom and your transformation into a more complete person.

The allegory here is not an independent will, but a mind working to destroy the divine balance.

The Devil corresponds to the number fifteen and the Hebrew letter Samekh.

Allegory
The struggle between the highest good and the highest evil; choice or conflict between order and chaos.
Description
In some decks, the Devil on the card is depicted traditionally, with horns, hooves, a tail and a pitchfork. He towers over a single pathetic figure. His posture, with his hand raised like a puppeteer, parodies the figure of the High Priest.

Most decks feature a large Devil and two smaller figures, male and female, standing at the foot of his throne. These smaller figures may be demons, humans, or horned creatures. In all such decks, they are chained or tied to the foot of the throne of the Devil. Note that the postures of all three figures are a repetition or parody of the postures depicted on the Fifth Arcana (High Priest).

The central figure of the Devil in these decks can take a variety of forms - from a horned goat to the likeness of a man. He can be both attractive and intimidating. Whatever the form, there are almost always wings and horns, sometimes an inverted pentagram is present on the forehead or on the crown.

In almost all decks, the Devil raises or extends his hand over the two souls chained to his throne. The main figure is usually seated, but may also be standing; on his face is either a seductive smile or rage. His mood directly affects the other two figures. If the Devil smiles, so do his minions; if he frowns, his slaves either mourn or tremble in fear.

The image of this powerful figure who governs all who fall under her influence can be read either as an antithesis or as sarcasm over the blessing that the High Priest (High Priest) gives on the Fifth Arcana. It is sometimes difficult to tell whether the two lesser figures are his captives, slaves, or favorites; one way or another, they are implicitly subject to his will.

Note that the figures standing on the sides not only repeat the minor priests of the Fifth Arcana, but also symbolize the two columns present on the cards of the Major Arcana.

inner meaning
The devil is the antithesis of good, symbolizes the forces that seek to disrupt the harmony of existence. Not just individualism or the desire to go his own way makes him the embodiment of evil. The magician (First Arcanum) also tries to impose his will on the world, and in fact the result of completing the path of the Tarot is your ability to truly control your own destiny.

The allegory here is not an independent will, but a mind working to destroy the divine balance. His goal is to overthrow the Divine law and plunge the world into a state of chaos.

The ancients taught that there is an order for the world in which all living beings are able to find their best destination. Divine law is called upon to establish and maintain this order. The devil seeks to break and overthrow him. He can act as a tempter or rule through fear, but in any case, his goal is to lead astray.

As the Tarot teaches, the true path is to get closer to the divine power. At this stage of spiritual development, you are dedicated enough to become a valuable servant of the forces of evil. It is at this point that you can choose whether to continue towards the final destination or take another path that ends here. At this moment, the temptation for the seeker is especially great. You simply have to wait until your tasks are completed (Temperance). The devil seems to indicate a way to achieve the same goal without waiting and without labor.

The power on offer is enormous, but the price is even higher. Don't forget that you can achieve your goal without the help of the Devil. He is only interested in you because your potential far exceeds anything he hoped to get by stopping you. You are not offered an easy road. For the power that the Devil offers, you will have to give up your free will.

Value in the layout
Direct or Positive: Hatred, violence, destruction. Disorder, doom, misfortune. Bound will. Your will and personality are transferred to another. Also, something predetermined and therefore inevitable, but not necessarily evil.

Reversed or Negative: Pettiness, weakness. Blindness, jealousy, sickness. Evil rock. Incorrect choice. A disaster for you, from which others will benefit.

You are offered a quick solution to your problems. If you are impatient enough to agree, you can see the collapse of your hopes and plans. Succeed on your own. Resist the temptation, which is very attractive, to cut corners and do not be afraid of hard work, continue it alone.

If this card represents the Questioner, then be careful. The power you have over your subordinates is intoxicating, and you may enjoy manipulating, controlling, and even playing with their lives. But the real Devil has one road - to hell.

The devil is associated primarily with fears, lies and ignorance, the result of which are doubts and pessimism. The very word "devil" comes from a root meaning "rival, adversary" - that is, someone or something that acts against your interests and well-being. The card shows what is blocking, restricting, or weakening your creative energy, what is preventing you from acting, and which may have something to do with childhood trauma and guilt. At best, you will do what is bad for you, taunt others, molest them, torment and confuse them. You may break social or sexual taboos, become obsessed with material needs, or be tempted to bend the accepted rules and force them to serve your purposes. You may seek income through improper use of power and influence, or you may impose your will on others or seek control over them. On the other hand, you may be overcome by the fear that some evil external forces want to harm you, and then you will begin to take out your paranoia on others, torturing them with your suspicion and hatred. Beneath all this, however, there will be an inability to love and, as a result, a feeling of isolation and lack of contact with people.

From a psychological point of view, this card represents the Shadow - those aspects of your personality that you deny, refuse to recognize or hide. She may represent sexuality, but sexuality associated with perversion and violence. You may be tempted by lust, greed or pride. You may become obsessed with a person or object and become fatally attracted to it. Emotionally, it could be panic or confusion. Perhaps you yourself awakened all the forces of hell or turned out to be a source of chaos. Sometimes at the same time, the Devil means just fun, playfulness and various practical jokes - "the devil himself made me do it." Or maybe you are afraid and carefully avoid what you consider "bad", and this in itself already limits and constrains your actions. Sometimes the Devil means the intentional and malicious infliction of pain on others, or the tendency to act out of jealousy, envy, or hostility. It can also be addictive behavior or compulsive behaviors and reactions. As the god Pan, the Devil inspires awe and draws a person to the elemental forces of nature. It can also mean a lack of a sense of humor and an inability to laugh at oneself, as well as excessive dogmatism and superficial perception.

Inverted Devil
The Devil reversed can represent more extreme extremes than any other tarot card. At one end of the spectrum is victorious evil, spiritual blindness, voluntary surrender in the face of temptation, and total self-indulgence. But at the other end, you reject evil and addiction and embark on the path to spiritual enlightenment. Following the principle of enantiodromia, you turn from a sinner into a saint, like a pendulum swung too far to one side and over the top. Remember St. Paul, who was converted on the road to Damascus and became an apostle from a villain. From time to time, the Devil reversed can mean a sense of superiority over the weaknesses and moral instability of others, or excessive truthfulness, ethics and virtue.

You can decisively reject all temptations, rip off the blindfold and slip out of an unpleasant situation. Perhaps it's time to quit a job that is devastating to you, in which you feel like the property of the company, but which you are afraid to leave due to the need to pay bills. The Devil reversed can also indicate the ability to access hitherto hidden treasures of creativity and the ability to enjoy life spontaneously. If you can realize that your fears are groundless, then you will be free from false prohibitions and manipulative scenarios, as well as from various kinds of codependencies. Often this card makes it possible to see their destructive behavioral patterns and the reasons for the misuse of energy resources. Sometimes it manifests itself in the fact that the weaknesses and vicious actions of this or that public person dispel your illusions. And sometimes it's your tendency to come up with reasons and excuses just to avoid seeing how bad the situation really is.

If you sincerely believe that this energy has nothing to do with you and project it onto other people, you see them as false leaders, soul-catchers and malicious troublemakers. The reflection of this card can be found in politicians and the crowd they control, in dictators and those from whom they make scapegoats, in critics and their victims, in sorcerers and dupes who believe them. On the inner plane, these are nightmares, panic and obsession with one's own and others' sinfulness. But at the same time, this energy is capable of manifesting itself as unconstrained fun and mockery, debunking evil and exposing false pride and blind prejudice.

In terms of health, the upright Devil represents violence - physical, emotional or sexual - as well as smoking, hemorrhoids and sexually transmitted diseases, while the inverted one can indicate recovery. In some cultures, what we call bacteria and viruses were considered demons that penetrate the body of the sick; in this context, the reversed Devil signifies their exile.

From a shamanic and magical point of view, this card represents the Horned God - the lord of nature! It is also trickster energy. It is associated with the establishment of protection and represents that stage of work with dreams and the Shadow, when, in order to return the lost part of the soul, the magician or shaman must defeat the enemy.

Traditional inverted meanings: destiny, rock Weakness, meanness. Blindness. Love passion and lust. Difficulties, intrigues, troubles. Enchantment, bewitchment. Release from bondage, end of slavery. Recovery, healing, respite. Divorce. First stage spiritual understanding. Virtue. Morality.

"God hides from the spirit of man,
but he opens his heart.
So when they say "I don't believe in God" -
It's the same as if he said:
"I dont like".
And the voice of darkness answers him:
"You will die because your heart has rejected life."

Description of the card and its inner meaning
Imagine a terrible lifeless valley. A blood red sun illuminates the bleak landscape. Amidst the smoke and smoke, a ghostly figure is visible. This is a formidable Prince of Darkness with a female breast and a goat's head. In one hand, lowered down, he holds a smoldering torch, the other is raised up with the intention of blessing. The image of the Devil seems to parody the image of the High Priest.

In most decks, the Devil is shown in front of two small figures - a man and a woman. His mood is transmitted to people who are completely dependent on Satan. If the Prince of Darkness smiles, they smile too; if he is angry, his slaves tremble with horror.

The fifteenth Arcana is the doctrine of a person's knowledge of the lowlands of his Spirit, this is the doctrine of fate that weighs on a human being.

The devil is the antithesis of good. His goal is to destroy the Divine Order, to bring chaos into this world. The allegory here is the mind, cold-blooded and cruel, seeking to upset the Universal Balance.

Card meaning
Direct position
The fifteenth Arcana in this case will describe a person who is only interested in profit. The questioner will have to communicate with him and solve some practical and, perhaps, uninteresting questions. But this path will have to be passed to the end, since the time has come to balance the earthly and spiritual life.

If the Devil card speaks of a situation, then its interpretation can be as follows: atheism, hatred, violence, bound will, perseverance, maximalism, all kinds of temptations. Sometimes this Arcana can mean excessive perseverance, ambitious plans. As in the case of the tenth or thirteenth Arcana, the Devil card tells about some predetermined events in the life of the Questioner - such events that he cannot influence. Their nature will be illuminated by the rest of the cards in the layout.

Reversed position
The person who will be described by the fifteenth Arcana in an inverted position represents some danger for the Questioner, as he is able to "ground" his soul with his non-spiritual views.

If the Devil card in an inverted position describes the situation, then the Questioner will need to prepare for the fact that jealousy and tears, quarrels and greed, weakness and illness, dependence on someone else's will, wrong choice, excessive alcohol addiction, promiscuity will enter his life. Sometimes the fifteenth Arcana is interpreted as the division of property and excessive commercialism.

"You will need to go through certain life tests, or rather, temptations, when too easy victory and power will be concentrated in your hands, which under other circumstances would have to be earned and deserved. Try not to let your ego rise above others. Remember that everything Devil's roads lead only to hell."

Description
If in the fourteenth Arcana you have learned patience and moderation, then perhaps you can cope with the temptations that the "Devil" will offer you. However, I have no doubt that it will be very difficult. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror. Does not the fire of greed, envy or vanity burn in your eyes? Is your heart melting with the desire to possess someone or something? And if you think that you are free from all these vile vices, is it not pride that drives you? Is it not out of a desire to feel better and higher than all people that you became an ascetic?

The roots of our vices go as deep as the images that personify the evil of the world. Times and customs are changing, peoples and religions are changing, coming to the forefront of history, but the antagonist of the creator god, the cosmic provocateur, the instigator and seducer, the violator of the world order and the enemy of the human race is always present. He changes names and looks, but his goal is always the same, and a snake's tail and a poisonous sting always crawl out from under any skin. Now we know him under the name Devil (Greek "slanderer"). This name is put on the map. The ancient Greeks called him Typhon. The ancient Egyptians called him Apophis.

Mythological dossier
Apep is a huge snake, personifying darkness and evil, the eternal enemy of the sun god Ra. He lives in the depths of the earth, where his battle with the army of Ra takes place, repeating every night. Later, he was identified with Seth, the killer of Osiris.

The lasso "Devil" of black color, personifying the darkness of the underworld, the upper and lower margins of the brown card, symbolize the earth and determine the boundaries of his power. The colors used in the image also determine the scope of its activity. This is black - the underworld, yellow - matter, pink - emotions and blue - the color of illusions. The Devil (Apopus) you see on the map is depicted in the form of a man with a serpent's head. In front of him are two people who have fallen under his influence. On a green platter (a symbol of hope), Apep carries golden gifts, which he offers to the one who bowed before him. The pink color of the clothes here is a symbol of carnal desires, the orange wig (a symbol of the joys of life) frames the blue head of the snake, that is, it is based on illusion. The devil is trying to attract supporters, declaring himself a fearless fighter against boring gods, a rebel and a champion of freedom. But his goal is always the same - to overthrow the Divine law and plunge the world into a state of chaos. In fact, all the temptations of the Devil are very simple - they are money, fame and voluptuousness. All together and each separately, they give the main temptation - power. The tempter can generously bestow them on anyone who is ready to give him their free will.

However, there is a character on the map who has realized the perniciousness of the devilish temptations and, in horror, refuses his gifts. Modest green clothing gives hope for liberation. Man is emaciated and weak, but the Devil has no power over him. Those who do not succumb to temptation can go to the light.

At this stage of spiritual development, you are dedicated enough to become a valuable servant of the forces of evil. Therefore, the temptation to stop at this stage is especially great. The devil will show you the way to achieve any goal without waiting and labor. The power on offer is enormous, but the price is even higher. After all, your potential far exceeds everything that it has to offer.

Value in the layout
In a straight position
The lasso "Devil" means that various temptations await you, which are difficult to resist. You may be asked to engage in a risky venture or pushed to an adventurous decision. The card speaks of a thirst for material or purely physical well-being. It involves great efforts in order to achieve material success, fame, fame, a happy occasion. Sometimes the card means that you are captivated by your feelings, voluptuousness and eroticism, or your passions (sex, play, alcohol). It is not excluded and an indication of the fears that overcome the soul. May portend deceit, betrayal or betrayal of a loved one. You seem to be haunted by evil rock. Sometimes interpreted as an omen of making important decisions or the final choice. The card says that evil is integral part both the essence of man and all life, and accepting evil or resisting it is only your own choice.

Advice. Here, as nowhere else, it is appropriate to recall the motto of wise people who have endured suffering: "Do not believe. Do not be afraid. Do not ask."

In an inverted position
The card symbolizes the abuse of power, the concentration of efforts solely on achieving material wealth, indicates a mercantile view of things. Means an insatiable thirst for power. The need for self-expression through purely physical action. The motto of this Arcana: "I want! I want! I want! I want at any cost!" However, this can mean getting rid of anxieties and tormenting fears.

Advice. Imagine what would happen if all your desires were fulfilled?

THE DEVIL
Of all the Arcana of the Tarot, the Devil seems to be the most difficult to understand, because everyone has his own. Perhaps, only a situation of dependence on someone or something, a weak will, a shameful failure of good intentions, as well as actions committed contrary to one's own convictions can be considered common to all. The devil, as it were, personifies the dark side of several cards: for the Magician it is black magic, for the Priestess it is part of her negative archetype, for the Priest it is hypocrisy, money-grubbing under the guise of a saint, for the Lovers it is a struggle for power or the degeneration of partnerships into pure sex, lust without the slightest a sign of love, for Justice - corruption or inability to admit one's own wrong. He also personifies exorbitant greed as the opposite side of the Force, immoderation as opposed to Temperance and rules various areas of the Unknown Edge of the Moon map. As a tempter, he most often appears before us under one or another attractive guise. One way or another, this card shows that we are playing with fire and must be damn (!) careful not to get burned. At a deep level, it means that our question affects, first of all, the shadow sides of our personality.

In the Egyptian Tarot, the ancient Greek monster Typhon, identified with Set, who is considered the “god of evil,” although Set was both wise (not without reason he is depicted as a crocodile or other reptile) and valiant in battle, helping Ra fight enemies.
This card always depicts an evil genius - a demon, a devil, huge, tailed, with wings like a bat; between his horns they often draw an inverted pentagram (five-pointed star), which in the old days was also considered a sign of evil, although this is just a sign of the limitations of our knowledge. In hand is a torch. In the old versions of the cards, he was depicted with a “second face”, which ends the lower part of the body - a Freudian symbol of subconscious drives, as we would say today.
The devil stands or sits on a stone, to which a naked man and woman are chained - Adam and Eve from the Lovers card. However, their postures and faces do not speak of suffering. On the contrary, they even look pleased with their fate.
This card opens the third septenary of the Major Arcana. It corresponds to the zodiac sign Capricorn. But Capricorn is not opposite to Gemini in the firmament, but constitutes an aspect of the quincunx with him, meaning more constructive interaction, creative union than confrontation. The Devil card symbolizes "temptations" - attractions that are often forgotten on purpose - or simply do not want to recognize them, and then they make themselves felt in the most unexpected way. The only way to fight this is not to avoid the "forbidden", but to accept it for what it is, go through it and leave it behind: the devil is not as terrible as he is painted.

Meaning of the card:
Do you think the devil has captured your soul? Do you think it is impossible to break out of the vicious circle? But look at the map: the chain does not compress the necks of the people depicted on it, but lies freely. It is worth taking it off - and the captivity is over! Whatever this chain represents for you: sex, play, alcohol or something else, you imposed it on yourself. And you can take it off too. Starting a new stage of life, you can, of course, give free rein to your hobbies - but has this “overture” dragged on?
In the old days, it was believed that the Devil is the devil with horns, interfering in human affairs and pushing his victims to evil deeds (“the demon beguiled”). Now this card is considered a symbol of a test, a “challenge”, as the Anglo-Saxons say, a kind of exam that a person must pass in order to test his strength and rise to a new level of awareness of himself and the world.
Anything can become such an exam or test - a risky venture, a decision to aggravate a conflict, or, indeed, alcohol, drugs, adultery. The trick is that the exam must be passed, it must be passed through consciously - and if the card is upright, this will only contribute to growth and liberation from temptations for the future.

Inverted:
A person will either not pass the exam (fear or fail), or will not be able to free himself from the addiction he has fallen into, at least in the near future.

For businessmen:
The devil is in a straight position - advice to respond with blackmail to blackmail, a threat to a threat: the enemies are weaker than him, they will retreat if you do not stop putting pressure on them. Inverted, on the contrary, advises to compromise or make concessions.

One of the more gloomy Major Arcana, the appearance of which in the layout usually scares beginners, is the Devil of the Tarot. We will consider the meaning of this card in detail with you today in order to understand whether it is really worth being afraid of it, what life changes it brings and what it can mean in combination with other Arcana. On the one hand, the archetype of the Devil is familiar to each of us, but on the other hand, something really fatal is not always hidden in the interpretation of the fifteenth Arcana. Often the card acts as a kind of warning. But let's talk about everything in order.

General description of the card, plot and meaning in the layout

So, what will be the Devil of the Tarot according to the meaning of Rider-Waite? In order to understand this, it is worth taking a closer look at the Arcana storyline. In the illustration, we see the figure of the Prince of Darkness occupying the main part of the map. Devil, Fallen Angel, Baphomet, Horned God, Pan - all these are the names of the central character of the fifteenth Arcana. At the feet of the Devil are two naked human figures - a man and a woman, most likely - these are Adam and Eve. People are chained to the throne, on which the Fallen Angel sits, with iron chains, horns can be seen on the heads of the characters, and tails behind. What does this say? Most likely, that the souls of these people were tempted, they stood on the dark side of the force, they are overcome by some kind of harmful addictions, which do not allow them to free themselves from the power of the Devil. But how exactly these addictions will manifest themselves in real life - you need to judge by the surrounding cards.

Keywords and card ideas in spreads

Let's look at the meaning and interpretation of the Devil Tarot card through capacious key concepts:

  • Indulgence
  • The path of degradation and self-destruction
  • Abusing your power
  • Cruelty
  • lower instincts
  • bad influence
  • Unseemly deeds
  • Addictions, vices
  • "Playing with fire"

The meaning of the card Devil in the upright position

In short, under the influence of the Devil, the situation becomes dangerous. When this card comes, a person seems to be on the verge, beyond which there is an inevitable destruction of anything. If we consider the sequence of the Arcana, we will see that the Devil destroys the harmony that reigns in the Temperance card, and as a result, all this leads us to the Tower. From the 15th Arcana alone, it is difficult to determine what exactly we are talking about - in most cases, you need to get an additional card, since self-destruction can also take place under the Devil (for example, narcotic or alcohol addiction, a vicious lifestyle, promiscuity in relationships or sexual deviations), and base manifestations in relation to other people (cruelty, obsession, love addiction, imprisonment, unseemly acts that destroy the lives of others). In a word, the Devil is always a “slippery slope”, upon which it is very difficult to return to normal life.

Reversed card meaning

The meaning of the reversed Devil Tarot can be seen in two aspects. The first is the liberation from harmful addictions, the return to normal life, curbing one's own vices and successfully getting rid of them. The second is a complete collapse, when vices and addictions take over a person and completely deprive him of his strength. How exactly to read the reverse Arcana depends on your personal perception. For example, it seems to us that the first variation is more appropriate, since the second one can be described by another card, for example, the Tower. But here, as they say, how many tarologists - so many opinions.

Arcane Warning

Do not go on about your addictions, do not enter into questionable relationships or affairs, otherwise your life can turn into a real nightmare.

Questions Answered by the Fifteenth Arcanum

  • What instincts are the most difficult for you to master?
  • Are you aware of your dependence on anything or anyone?
  • Do you have enough inner strength not to be led by addictions?
  • Are you able to stop in time?

So, we have considered the meaning of the Devil Tarot. Remember that the fifteenth Arcana is always a warning. The main problem of this card is the person's awareness of the fact that he has embarked on a "slippery path". If he understands this and is ready to make every effort to change his life, the Devil can be avoided. Otherwise, it won't end well.
