Psoriasis is a severe systemic disease that mainly affects skin tissues.

Treatment of psoriasis is a long process that may not always be successful. That is why the methods of therapy that can be used in the treatment of psoriasis at home, as well as folk recipes that help with this disease, are so popular among patients.

Psoriasis, its features, causes and symptoms

Until now, not a single scientist can answer with certainty the question of why this disease appears. There are several theories, but none of them is able to explain all the features of the appearance of pathology. The most popular hypothesis is that autoimmune processes play an important role in the development of psoriasis.

Also, the mechanism of the development of the disease is not entirely clear. However, one fact is undeniable - in psoriasis, the structural and functional properties of the upper layer of skin cells (epidermis) are violated. Usually the cells of this layer are updated after a month. However, in psoriasis, for reasons that are not entirely clear, this process is accelerated several times. The cells do not take root on the surface of the skin, and as a result, psoriasis plaques typical of the disease appear. They can be located on various parts of the body. At the same time, they not only spoil the appearance of a person, but also make themselves felt with a strong itch.

Plaque-like psoriasis is the most common form of the disease. In addition to plaque psoriasis, also called psoriasis vulgaris, there are several more types of the disease:

  • erythematous,
  • pustular,
  • drop-shaped,
  • psoriatic erythroderma.

In some cases, the disease can affect the nails and even joints. However, the treatments for different types of psoriasis are largely similar.

The disease is found in people most often at a young age. The proportion of those who experience psoriasis in childhood or in old age is small.

Even if qualified treatment is carried out, it still does not apply to fast processes. Sometimes the disease can take a protracted course. Sometimes relief comes and the symptoms go away. The patient appears to have recovered. But actually it is not. There is simply a remission - a period when the disease recedes. But remission is most often interrupted by another exacerbation.

Medical science does not yet know methods to help patients completely get rid of the disease. Therefore, the goal of treatment is to alleviate unpleasant symptoms, lengthen remission periods and prevent complications - diseases of the nails and joints, generalized skin pathology.

Treatment methods for psoriasis

Most of the sick at the first symptoms go to the doctor, believing that traditional medicine knows well how to treat psoriasis. The specialist examines the patient, and if the diagnosis is confirmed, he prescribes treatment.

However, curing the disease is more difficult than it might seem to the patient at the very beginning of the disease. In most cases, there is no immediate relief. Time passes, but unpleasant symptoms do not go away, and the person does not get rid of the disease. This situation suits few people. Therefore, many patients turn their attention to alternative methods of treatment, including traditional medicine methods, use herbal preparations, rather than ready-made medicines bought at a pharmacy. And some patients use non-traditional methods of treatment due to the fact that they consider traditional medicines and ointments too expensive.

It cannot be said that all methods of traditional medicine in the treatment of psoriasis are ineffective. After all, the disease did not appear yesterday. She has been known for a very long time. Therefore, healers from the people have developed reliable ways to deal with skin inflammation. Some of these methods have been recognized by modern science.

Therefore, it would not be entirely correct to divide the methods of treatment into traditional and non-traditional. Each case of psoriasis is individual, and many patients can be helped out by remedies that do not have any positive effect on others.

What are the goals of antipsoriatic therapy? This:

  • reduction of unpleasant itching,
  • acceleration of regeneration of superficial skin tissues,
  • cleansing the skin from plaques and other rashes,
  • normalization of the immune system,
  • body detoxification,
  • normalization of the state of the nervous system.

However, there is still no need to wait for a quick healing - the fight against the disease often drags on for months, years, or even decades.

Before moving on to a review of home remedies and traditional medicine, we list the treatment methods offered by doctors.

First of all, these are external preparations - ointments, creams, lotions. They have a wide range of therapeutic effects:

  • keratolytic,
  • anti-inflammatory,
  • antibacterial,
  • moisturizing.

Keratolytic ointments are especially in demand for psoriasis. After all, the keratolytics included in their composition contribute to the accelerated exfoliation of epidermal tissues. The main kertatolytic substance used in psoriasis is salicylic acid. It also has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.

In psoriasis ointments you can also find:

  • calcipotriol,
  • sulfur
  • zinc oxide,
  • zinc pyrithione,
  • naphthalan oil,

Most ointments are applied to the affected areas of the body in a thin layer. You can not spread several ointments on a sore spot at once - this can lead to unpredictable consequences.

Hormonal ointments

Nevertheless, no matter how good keratolytic and other ointments are, in the treatment of psoriasis, most likely, one cannot do without hormonal-based ointments. Such ointments are usually prescribed for the period of exacerbation. They contain hormones - glucocorticosteroids, which quickly remove the symptoms and signs of inflammation. However, such drugs are recommended to be used only as prescribed by a doctor. Therefore, most patients often resort to folk ways fight the disease, especially during remission.

Medicines taken by mouth

In severe forms of psoriasis, immunosuppressive drugs and cytostatics, glucocorticosteroids in tablets are prescribed.

They are also prescribed for psoriasis:

  • vitamin complexes containing, in addition to vitamins A, E and D, zinc, and other trace elements;
  • enterosorbents;
  • probiotics;
  • enzyme preparations for the gastrointestinal tract.

UV therapy

With an average degree of psoriasis, physiotherapy methods, primarily PUVA therapy, demonstrated high efficiency. It consists in irradiating the skin with specially selected UV radiation and simultaneously taking photosensitizing drugs. These drugs increase the effectiveness of radiation exposure to the skin.

Tar

One of the best keratolytic agents are tar-based preparations. They can also be attributed to folk remedies, although now a lot of ointments with tar can be bought in pharmacies.

Medical tar is of two types. First, it can be mined from coal. And another type of tar is of plant origin. Similar tar is obtained from birch, juniper or pine.

Tar is a brown viscous mass. It is added not only to ointments, but also to detergents. Everyone knows tar soap, which is also recommended for hygiene procedures for patients with psoriasis, and not only them. Can be used in the treatment and pure tar. It is rubbed into the skin of the affected areas and left for half an hour.

Solidol in the treatment of psoriasis

Good healing effect in psoriasis, preparations containing grease are demonstrated. This substance is a mixture of fatty acids. There are many recipes for ointments with grease. The advantage of these drugs is their affordable price, low degree of allergenicity.

You can also use pure grease to lubricate the skin. However, this should be
a special grease intended for medical use, and not technical. The problem is that technical grease contains a lot of additives that can harm the skin.

It is still worth checking the grease for a possible allergic reaction. To check, a little grease is applied to the inner surface of the elbow. If no negative manifestations (redness, itching, swelling, etc.) appear within 12 hours, then the drug can be used.

Pure solidol cannot be kept on the skin for a long time (unlike ointments with solidol). Procedures using this substance can be started with a 10-minute duration, gradually increasing this time by 10 minutes (after each week). Solid oil must be washed off the skin with tar soap. The duration of the course is 3 months.

Pharmacy ointments containing grease:

  • Kartalin,
  • Antipsor,
  • Magnipsor,
  • Cytopsor.

diet therapy

A method that any psoriasis patient can easily follow at home is proper diet. After all, the skin reflects all the processes occurring in the body. And the wrong diet can disrupt the course of these processes. Therefore, some products are harmful to the skin, as they negatively affect its condition. There are even special diets, such as the Pegano Diet, designed for people with psoriasis.

The essence of the Pegano diet is to find the right balance between acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods. The former include meat and high-protein foods, legumes. The second - vegetables, fruits and cereals, with rare exceptions. The ratio of alkaline and acidic products, according to Pagano's theory, should be 4:1.

  • citrus,
  • chocolate,
  • coffee,
  • carbonated drinks,
  • preserves and marinades,
  • fried and smoked dishes.

The diet must include vegetable oils, low-fat dairy products.

Skin care

Treatment will be ineffective if you do not follow the basic rules of skin care. It is worth remembering that the skin with psoriasis has increased sensitivity. Even a small cut or injection can lead to an exacerbation, the appearance of psoriatic plaques. This phenomenon is called the Koebner phenomenon.

Also skin care includes:

  • regular washing with mild hypoallergenic products;
  • protection of the skin from excessive drying, hypothermia or overheating;
  • wearing comfortable clothing made from natural materials;
  • protect hands from exposure to harsh household chemicals.

Climatic and spa treatment of psoriasis

Useful for psoriasis can also be methods such as balneotherapy and spa treatment. Sometimes an improvement in condition can occur simply as a result of a change in climate to a warmer one. After all, as you know, exacerbations of psoriasis often occur in the cold season.

It can also be useful to stay at sea, even for a short time. Moist and clean sea air positive impact on the skin.

Therapeutic baths

Medicinal baths are very popular in self-treatment of the disease. However, this method has contraindications. In particular, it is forbidden to take baths for people with oncological diseases and heart failure.

The most commonly used therapeutic baths contain the following components:

  • sage,
  • needles,
  • pine buds,
  • valerian,
  • horsetail,
  • sea salt,
  • celandine.

Therapeutic baths with warm water and plant extracts and infusions dissolved in them help relieve itching and inflammation of the skin, and have a calming effect. The recommended duration of bathing is 10-20 minutes. The optimum water temperature is about 38°C.

Baths with sea salt are best taken during remission as a preventive measure. The recommended number of procedures is 2-4 times a week. Sea salt contains various trace elements, such as potassium, magnesium and iodine, which have a beneficial effect on skin condition.

Sports and active recreation

Sports and physical culture by themselves do not affect the condition of the skin. However, they help to strengthen the immune system and the body as a whole, relieve nervous tension. Since the disease is largely psychogenic in nature, these methods of therapy for many patients may also be useful.

Phytotherapy

Phytotherapy - a method that treats various diseases from ancient times. With this technique, the role of drugs is performed by various representatives of the flora. On the Internet you can find a huge number of recipes with medicinal plants, including those that help with psoriatic symptoms. Plants can be introduced into the composition of ointments, medicinal preparations for lotions, and can be taken orally in the form of decoctions.

However, caution must be exercised here. Indeed, among medicinal plants there are many allergens, and a number of them are contraindicated in cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, before starting treatment with any prescription, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Vegetable oils

If psoriatic plaques are observed on the scalp, then the main treatment can be supplemented with the use of medicated oils:

  • sea buckthorn,
  • peanut,
  • rosemary,
  • tea tree oils.

For a long time, they try to try all possible means to get rid of plaques and peeling for many years. One of the most effective means of traditional medicine considered to be tar. Although most patients note that it helps to cure plaques only if psoriasis has begun relatively recently.

Before treatment with birch tar, be sure to check if you have allergic reaction for this substance. This can be done with a special test. Soak a cotton swab in a small amount of tar and apply the product to the crook of the elbow. If you suffer from allergies, then its first signs (redness, itching, peeling) will appear in half an hour. Remember that there are no other contraindications for the use of birch tar.

Treatment with this remedy lasts 2-6 weeks, depending on the stage and severity of the disease. You can buy tar at any pharmacy. Apply with a cotton swab to those areas of the skin that have been affected by psoriasis. The first days of treatment, tar is applied for only ten minutes. After that, it must be washed off tar soap. Gradually, the therapy time increases to 40 minutes per day. It is best to apply tar in the evening.

In a couple of days you will be able to see the first positive results. But in no case do not stop treatment until all plaques disappear completely.

Despite the fact that it is birch tar that is considered the best folk remedy for psoriasis, some patients prefer other treatment options.

Even chronic forms of psoriasis can be easily cured with ordinary baking soda. In some patients, after it comes a long-term remission, which is quite difficult to achieve with the help of medications. The simplest and cheapest option for treating psoriasis with soda is to use baths with this substance.

To do this, hot water is drawn into the bathroom and up to 900 g of soda is added to it. If necessary, you can also add sea salt, chamomile or string infusions. In the bathroom you need to lie down for at least half an hour to get an effective therapeutic result. After that, in no case do not wash off the soda from the skin and do not wipe yourself.

Such baths are taken every other day from two to eight weeks. until complete remission.

Some patients claim that copper sulfate helps to cure psoriatic plaques quickly and for a long time. To use this recipe, you will need the following ingredients: yellow sulfur (in powder form), copper sulfate, dried celandine (in powder form), pork fat and birch tar. Take 50 g of sulfur and 50 g of burnt vitriol (in powder form). There you also add 25 g of birch tar and celandine, as well as 150 g of fat. Put the mixture in a water bath, stir. Then let cool.

The resulting ointment should be lubricated with plaques once a day (preferably at bedtime). To avoid any problems in the form of allergies, you should first try the ointment on a small area of \u200b\u200bthe skin.

Alternative treatment of psoriasis of the scalp

For the treatment of psoriasis of the scalp, special shampoos made at home are best suited. The following recipe is considered the most effective.

Take 20 g of honey, baby shampoo and one egg white. All these ingredients must be thoroughly mixed and applied to the head every day for three to eight weeks for 15-20 minutes.

No less effective in the treatment of psoriasis of the scalp are a variety of infusions and decoctions that are taken orally. Among them should be highlighted:

  1. Take 20 g of elder flowers and pour 500 g of boiling water. Leave for about 1.5 hours. It is necessary to take the tincture every day an hour after meals (120 g).
  2. Take the roots of calamus and elecampane and combine them with celandine, St. John's wort, lingonberry leaves, horsetail and black elderberry flowers. 10 g of the mixture must be poured with boiling water (250 g).

Treatment of plantar psoriasis with folk remedies

The most effective treatment for plantar psoriasis is fat or machine grease. At the same time, please note that only a simple grease helps, which is sold for lubricating metal automotive parts. Today you can see various preparations based on this substance with herbal ingredients, but, as practice shows, they do not bring the desired result.

Immediately you should set yourself up for long-term treatment(from one to two months). Plantar psoriasis is usually treated for a long time and hard, since the plaques are located in a place that often comes into contact with other surfaces.

For treatment, you just need to smear the affected skin with grease. In the early days, spread grease for 15-20 minutes and every day (during the week) increase this time to 40 minutes. Be sure to wash off the grease after use with tar soap.

Alternative treatment of nail psoriasis

In order to improve the condition of nails with psoriasis, it is recommended to use the following folk remedy.

Take bay leaves (20 g) and pour them with 400 g of boiled hot water. Cook for about ten minutes over low heat. After that, cool and strain. The infusion should be taken orally in a third of a glass three times a day. Therapy lasts up to seven days. After that, it is worth taking a two-day break, and then drinking again according to the old scheme until all the symptoms of the disease disappear.

You can also rub a liquid form of vitamin A (retinol) directly onto the nail plate. But it is worth taking into account that such treatment will last at least three months. Some people use cornstarch or oatmeal nail soaks.

Folk remedies for the treatment of psoriasis on the elbows

One of the most effective remedies for treating psoriatic plaques on the elbows is egg ointment. Many patients claim that thanks to this drug they managed to achieve a stable remission for several years.

In order to prepare egg ointment, the following ingredients are needed: put one raw egg (with shell) in a 200-gram glass jar. Pour it with vinegar essence, which should completely cover the egg. Close the lid and put in a dark and cool place for one day. Take out the egg and crush it with the shell. Add some pork or goose fat there. Stir.

This ointment should be applied to the affected elbows in a small amount, since at first the remedy will be quite unpleasant to burn. After a while, you can increase the amount. After 1-2 hours, wash off the ointment with water and spread the skin with a regular cream (children's cream is best). Apply only once a day. The effectiveness of this tool can be seen pretty soon (2-3 days). Therapy continues until the complete disappearance of the plaques.

Treatment of psoriasis with herbs

Medicinal herbs are often used to treat psoriasis. But the most effective among them is purslane, in particular its seeds. Since ancient times, garden purslane has been considered the safest remedy for the treatment of psoriasis. It should also be remembered that this plant helps to achieve long-term remission, which is quite difficult to obtain using conventional medications.

Purslane can be purchased either at a pharmacy or in an online store. If you are going to buy online, then you need to pay attention to the "Collection of garden purslane."

For effective therapy you need to create a concentrated tincture. To do this, take two tablespoons of purslane seeds and brew them in boiled water in a thermos. After the infusion has stood (about an hour), you can apply it to the affected areas of the skin. Remember that the skin must be wet from the tincture.

The therapy lasts from four to six weeks and during this time the patient can completely get rid of psoriatic plaques. Remission is long enough. In some cases, it may even be five years.

Treatment of psoriasis with homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies are often used to treat psoriasis. At the same time, some of them help to completely get rid of psoriatic plaques, as well as to get a long-term remission. But it is immediately necessary to pay attention to the fact that homeopathic treatment is lengthy and rather complicated. In no case should you refuse treatment in the middle of the course, otherwise you will not get effective and positive results.

The main homeopathic remedy for the treatment of psoriasis today is Psorinochel. It is prescribed ten drops twice a day (morning and afternoon). Simultaneously with this remedy, Hepel tablets are also prescribed, which are taken twice (in the morning and in the evening).

note that homeopathic preparations, as a rule, are not so effective if they are taken separately from medical agents.

Rating of traditional medicine recipes in the treatment of psoriasis

Remember that traditional medicine is considered more effective in the early stages of the disease, when the first plaques appear on the patient's skin.

Among the most popular folk recipes are the following:

  1. Celandine is perhaps the most famous medicinal plant, which is used, among other things, for the treatment of psoriasis. Most often, its juice is used. Such treatment is carried out in the summer, since it is during this period that the celandine begins to bloom. Fresh juice of the plant is applied to psoriatic plaques immediately after harvesting the plant. The therapy lasts about three months and during this time the patient can see an effective result.
  2. Walnut shell - it is used to prepare warm baths. Apply during an exacerbation of the disease. To make such a bath, you need to take half a kilogram of walnut shells and insist in boiling water. It is recommended to lie in such a bath for half an hour.
  3. Meadowsweet - the root of this medicinal plant is used to treat psoriasis. It must be used in powder form. To prepare an ointment based on the root of the meadowsweet, you need to take petroleum jelly or oil and half a glass of crushed root. Boil the mixture in a water bath and smear it on the affected skin.

Effective treatment of psoriasis with folk remedies

Alternative treatment in the fight against psoriatic plaques is more effective. It helps to achieve a long-term remission (in some cases even up to five years), as well as quickly clear the skin of unpleasant external manifestations. Each patient chooses for himself the most effective and proven method. The most popular today are: birch tar, celandine juice, viburnum tinctures, baking soda, machine grease. But you should understand that you may be allergic to these products, so before using them, you need to test for allergic reactions.

Dermatological diseases give a person a lot of problems: both aesthetic and general. The skin looks unattractive, and constant itching, pain, swelling and irritation impair the quality of life. Psoriasis is one of these problems that can bother for many years, gradually progressing, increasing the duration and frequency of periods of exacerbation, diverging throughout the body. Are traditional methods of treatment effective here and which one is better to use?

What is psoriasis

An alternative name for this disease is scaly lichen. Psoriasis is a chronic dermatological disease (dermatosis) of non-infectious origin. According to most doctors, it is based on autoimmune disorders: when the body has an abnormal production of a large number of antibodies. A few important points:

  • In 30% of patients, the onset of the disease falls on the period of 15-25 years. Persons of both sexes are affected with equal frequency.
  • Psoriasis is characterized by an undulating course, in which exacerbations are spontaneous or caused by the influence of external factors (alcohol consumption, smoking, stress).
  • The course of the disease, even in the same patient in different periods of exacerbation and remission, may look different.

The clinical picture of psoriasis depends on the specific form it has taken. The main symptom is red papules: very dry, raised above the skin, merging into large plaques, which are areas of chronic inflammation. In the center are pale or gray spots, similar to hardened wax. They are mainly formed on the folds (outer and inner zones), but can also appear on:

  • scalp;
  • buttocks;
  • back
  • palms;
  • plantar part of feet;
  • external genitalia.

Vulgar or simple psoriasis is the most common form (occurs in 80-90% of patients) and is characterized by the formation of foci of inflamed, hot skin, covered with silvery-white scales. The affected area is compacted, when the gray layer is removed, the skin under it bleeds, and is easily injured. As the disease progresses, whole plates of psoriatic plaques appear. There are several more forms of the disease noted in the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases):

  • Psoriasis of the flexion surfaces (or reverse) - inflamed red spots rise slightly above healthy skin, almost do not peel off, are located only in folds. The areas of the external genitalia, armpits, and inguinal region are predominantly affected. In women, spots may appear under the mammary glands. Often, the disease is complicated by a fungal infection due to increased sweating of the lesions.
  • Teardrop-shaped - the elements of the lesion are small, dry, red or purple in color, have the shape of a drop or a small dot. They cover large surfaces of the dermis, mainly appear on the hips, shoulders, forearms, and back. Developing given form often after a streptococcal infection.
  • Pustular (exudative) - the most severe form, characterized by the formation of blisters filled with transparent inflammatory exudate (pustules). The dermis nearby is hot, edematous, compacted, prone to exfoliation. With secondary infection, suppuration appears.
  • Arthropathic - skin manifestations are accompanied by an inflammatory process in the joints or connective tissue, predominantly affecting the phalanges of the fingers or toes. In a severe course of the disease, the patient's disability is not ruled out, up to being bedridden.
  • Erythrodermic - the inflammatory process and peeling in this form of psoriasis are generalized (common), the skin actively exfoliates. May be observed severe itching, swelling, soreness when touched. Psoriatic erythroderma can occur as an exacerbation of an unstable vulgar form, especially against the background of glucocorticoid withdrawal, and does not exclude a lethal outcome.

The ICD-10 also mentions psoriatic onychodystrophy: the disease in this case does not affect the dermis, but the nail plates. The result is a change in the color of the nail bed (yellowing, whitening), the appearance of small spots or dots on the plate and under it, transverse grooves. Thickening of the adjacent skin, especially the lateral ridges, delamination of the nails, brittleness or their complete loss is not excluded.

Treatment of psoriasis at home with folk remedies

The search for an effective way to combat the disease begins with establishing the cause of its occurrence. There is no single method for treating psoriasis, much depends on the severity of the patient's condition, age, the presence of additional pathologies, the specific form of the disease, so doctors allow the use of traditional medicine in tandem with pharmaceutical preparations. They may have the following properties:

  • anti-inflammatory;
  • antibacterial;
  • decongestant;
  • antifungal;
  • multi-healing;
  • antiallergic.

Neither drug therapy nor folk remedies provide complete and final relief from psoriasis, so they are almost equal in effectiveness: if you choose the right scheme, you can quickly improve the condition, prolong the remission period, and reduce the severity of the acute stage. For maximum effectiveness, alternative treatment should be comprehensive - act internally and locally, pursue the following goals:

  • eliminate the cause of the exacerbation (external factors, general or non-specific hypoallergenic diet);
  • alleviate symptoms (local compresses and lotions based on herbal infusions, raw grated potatoes, cabbage pickle, homemade ointments, vegetable oils);
  • increase the overall defenses of the body (reception of herbal decoctions and alcohol or water tinctures inside).

An important element in the therapeutic regimen for psoriasis is diet. The patient should give up alcohol, confectionery, animal fats, any store-bought products with preservatives, aromatics and flavors, dyes.   • coffee;
  • citrus;
  • potato;
  • flour;
  • eggs.

Before treating psoriasis folk remedies intended for internal use, alternative medicine experts advise cleaning with activated charcoal. General state improves, but the drug does not affect psoriatic plaques, therefore it cannot be considered an independent remedy. Cleaning is done like this:

  1. Calculate the daily dosage of coal: for every 10 kg of weight, take 1 tablet. Rounding is carried out according to the classical rules of mathematics: the number up to 5 - down, the number after 5 - up. So, with a weight of 46 kg, a person needs 5 tablets of coal.
  2. In the evening, take the tablets, chewing finely and drinking half a glass of warm water, carrying out the procedure for 3 days. Some experts advise drinking coal during the day, for 40 days, but such actions are not safe for the digestive tract.

  • Stick to a set schedule for topical treatments (especially baths).
  • Do not combine folk remedies with hormonal drugs(exception - medical prescription).
  • Do not try to tear off the crusts on psoriatic plaques on your own, avoid injuring the skin.
  • If the condition worsens, the selected remedy should be canceled and an appointment with a doctor should be made.

Winston Churchill, who himself suffered from psoriasis, promised to erect a monument of pure gold to a man who would determine the cause of the disease and find effective remedy for her treatment. Unfortunately, there are no candidates yet. Nevertheless, there are means, the use of which allows you to achieve a stable remission. Many of them can be used at home.

What is this disease?

Psoriasis is a relapsing disease with a chronic course, the main manifestation of which is a rash in the form of spots and peeling of the skin. Sometimes accompanied by failure lymph nodes, joints, muscles, bones, neurological changes. The ongoing therapy provides for a set of measures aimed at eliminating provoking factors and relieving the symptoms of the disease. Is there enough effective ways psoriasis treatment at home.

Causes

This disease is essentially an abnormal reaction of the body to external stimuli, as a result of which the top layer of the skin dies faster than it should normally. Typically, the duration of the cell division cycle is 3-4 weeks. With psoriasis, it is reduced to 4-5 days.

The causes of the disease have not yet been elucidated. Currently, experts are more inclined to the theory of the hereditary multifactorial nature of psoriasis. In other words, the basis of its development is not one reason, but a whole complex:

  • genetic predisposition;
  • violation of metabolic processes;
  • immunological changes;
  • disruption of the endocrine system;
  • neurological disorders;
  • stress.

With all the variety of existing theories about the origin of the disease, one thing can be said for sure: psoriasis is not an infectious disease and it is impossible to catch it.

Symptoms

Psoriasis comes in flare-ups. There are three stages in its course:

  1. progression.
  2. stationary stage.
  3. Regression.

The onset of psoriasis is acute. Small bright red spots appear on the skin, increasing along the periphery and reaching the size of a coin. Merging with each other, they form psoriatic plaques. Most often, rashes are localized on the scalp, elbows, knees, anterior surface of the legs. In about 1/3 of cases, itching and a feeling of tightness of the skin appear.

Rashes in psoriasis have three characteristic features, called the psoriatic triad:

  1. Stearin spot phenomenon: grayish-white scales form on the surface of the skin, which are easily removed when scraped.
  2. Terminal Film Phenomenon: Further scraping reveals a smooth pink surface.
  3. The phenomenon of pinpoint bleeding: droplets of blood appear on a smooth exposed surface.

If you experience symptoms of psoriasis, you should consult a dermatologist. After the diagnosis is made, an appropriate course of treatment is prescribed. At the same time, treatment is carried out at home.

How to do home treatment

To date, it is impossible to cure psoriasis forever either in medical institutions or at home. The purpose of the therapy is to control its course. Prolongation of the remission stage is achieved with oral medications and topical agents to relieve symptoms. This:

  • therapeutic ointments, creams;
  • lotions;
  • shampoos;
  • herbal infusions;
  • UV irradiation

Principles of home therapy

For successful treatment of psoriasis at home, you must adhere to certain rules:

  • Regularly use the prescribed medications by following the instructions exactly.
  • If the symptoms are mild, you can limit yourself to light remedies with plant extracts (for example, aloe vera). In severe cases of the disease, the use of hormonal drugs is necessary.
  • With the help of special creams, maintain a normal level of skin hydration.
  • After softening the crusts, carefully and very carefully remove loose ones. Removal of crusts promotes more intensive absorption of therapeutic creams and lotions.
  • Accurately follow the prescribed sunbathing and UV therapy schedule.
  • To get rid of the manifestations of psoriasis, it is necessary to use simple means whenever possible. At home, it is not recommended to use several drugs and ointments at the same time, since such an approach makes it impossible to determine the effectiveness of one particular drug.
  • Between courses of treatment you need to take a break - from 1 month to six months.
  • If a child has psoriasis, it is first necessary to determine the provoking factors and eliminate them. Sometimes diet is sufficient to treat the disease.
  • Periodically contact your doctor or specialized centers, especially if symptoms of the disease are severe. Be interested in new developments in the field and consult with experts regarding the appropriateness of their application.

Ointments and creams

In the treatment of psoriasis at home, it is necessary to use ready-made preparations. Since many of them have a rather strong effect and have a number of contraindications and side effects before using them, consultation with a specialist is required.

Hormonal drugs

This group of funds is used in severe cases of the disease. They contribute to the rapid improvement of the patient's condition, but the effect is not long-lasting. In addition, prolonged use of these ointments provokes serious disorders in the liver, kidneys, and cardiovascular system. Another problem is the high likelihood of addiction and the effect of discontinuation of the drug if it is necessary to stop its use. Another negative point: hormonal ointments in most cases provoke the development of psoriatic arthritis.

In psoriasis, a fairly wide range of hormonal ointments, which are grouped according to the active substance.

Active ingredient: Triamcinolone

Ointments: Ftoderm, Kenalog, Berlikort, Polkortolone, Fluorocort.

The active substance is hydrocortisone

Ointments: Hydrocortisone, Hyoxysone, Corteid, Sopolkort, Daktakort, Lokoid, Sulfodecortem.

Non-hormonal ointments

Psoriasis can also be treated at home with non-hormonal drugs. They have a less pronounced effect than glucocorticosteroids, but in many cases the result obtained persists for a longer time. In addition, non-hormonal drugs do not lead to serious consequences or addiction.

Ointments with salicylic acid

Salicylic ointment, Salicylic-zinc paste.

They have keratolytic, locally irritating, antiseptic action. They reduce the severity of the inflammatory process, soften the keratinized layer of the skin and contribute to its exfoliation. Salicylic ointment is used to eliminate peeling. The paste is prescribed depending on the depth of the inflammatory process.

Ointments with zinc

Zinc ointment, zinc paste.

They have a drying, anti-inflammatory, adsorbing, astringent, antiseptic effect. Reduce inflammation, relieve irritation, form a protective barrier to prevent the negative effects of environmental factors on damaged skin.

Ointments with tar

For the treatment of psoriasis at home, agents are often used, which include pine, birch, juniper tar, as well as coal tar.

The most popular of them: Antipsorin, Colloidin, Alfozil, Anthrasulfonic ointment, Antramin ointment, Berestin.

They have an anti-inflammatory, irritating, disinfecting effect. Improve blood circulation in the affected area, stimulate skin regeneration.

Since they have a pronounced local irritant effect, you need to start by applying small doses to small areas of the body. If the patient tolerates the drug well, you can gradually increase the dosage.

In the summer, tar products should be used very carefully, since tar has photosensitizing properties, as a result of which exposure to sunlight can lead to the development of allergies.

Ointments with vitamin D

At home, psoriasis can be treated with products containing synthetic analogues of vitamin D3.

Psorkutan, Daivonex (Calcipotriol). The action of these ointments is based on the suppression of the proliferation of keratinocytes. The drugs do not lead to atrophy of the skin, give a lasting effect. Remission can last more than a year. To increase efficiency, the simultaneous use of UV irradiation is recommended. The effect of Calcipotriol on calcium metabolism is approximately 100 times weaker than that of vitamin D3. The drug should not be used simultaneously with ointments containing salicylic acid.

Oil preparations

The most commonly used: Naftaderm, Neftesan, Ichthyolo-naftalan ointment, Naftalan ointment, Losterin.
Ointments eliminate itching, have an exfoliating, absorbable, moderate analgesic effect. Caution should be exercised when using them at home. During the period of exacerbation of psoriasis, with anemia, kidney failure it is better to be treated with safer remedies, since preparations containing oil sometimes cause complications of these conditions. In addition, they can lead to increased itching, redness, increased dryness of the skin, furunculosis.

Vitamin ointments

Aekol - is a combined preparation with vitamins A and E, beta-carotene, soybean oil in the composition. The ointment improves metabolism, normalizes tissue trophism, accelerates the regeneration process, and has a wound healing effect.

Preparations with solidol

It is also possible to cure psoriasis at home with the help of purified and preparations based on it, such as Kartalin, Magnipsor, Cytopsor, Antipsoriasis. Due to deep penetration into the skin, they allow you to achieve a pronounced therapeutic effect. Psoriasis can be accompanied by disruption of the normal functioning of the digestive system. In such cases, enzyme preparations are prescribed: Creon, Festal, Panzinorm.

For detoxification of the body, Enterosgel, Polysorb, Enterodez are prescribed.

When joining acute infection it is necessary to take antibiotics: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides. Their use at home, as well as taking all other medicines, is possible only on the recommendation of the attending physician. The pain syndrome resulting from the complication of the inflammatory process in psoriasis can be eliminated with the help of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Xefocam, Nurofen, Nise.

How and with what else can this disease be treated? Recently, Chinese drugs have become very popular. These are capsules and ointments, which, according to manufacturers, have miraculous properties. Many of them are not registered in the Russian Federation and are distributed illegally. Dealers claim that the composition of the funds includes only Chinese herbs. However, laboratory studies show that in most cases these drugs contain glucocorticosteroids, and their uncontrolled intake, even with a stretch, cannot be called harmless.
